The Art of Crafting in Stone

Latest Articles

There are a great many large stone sculptures to be admired in the world, but stone sculptures come in all sizes. Some of them, like carved stone scarabs, are small enough to fit easily into the palm of a hand. Other stone sculptures are so large they are carved into mountains, and a good example is Mt. Rushmore in South Dakota. No matter what size they are, carving stones is an art that takes muscle as well as mind.

There are several thoughts on how to carve stone, and it depends upon the artist and the work they are trying to create. There is one school of thought that the artist should simply begin carving the rock to see what comes out, and the other way of thinking is to plan what to carve first. By coming up with a plan, the artist can then select the rock that will make it easiest to create their piece.
